The decorations are boxed up, the gift wrap is piling up, and the cold weather has you spending more time at home. If you look around in Elmira, Corning, Horseheads, or Waverly and see clutter in every corner, you are not alone. Winter is a good time for an indoor cleanout, and a roll-off dumpster in the driveway makes it much easier to get everything out in one go. Here is how we suggest planning it.
Why a Winter Cleanout Works
- You are already inside. Short days and cold weather mean fewer outdoor chores competing for your time, so basements, attics, and garages finally get your attention.
- A fresh start. Post-holiday clutter is at its peak right now: boxes, packaging, old decorations, and the things the new gifts replaced. Clearing it out while it is fresh is easier than letting it settle in.
- Get ahead of spring. Starting now means your cleanout is finished before warmer weather brings a long list of outdoor projects.
- One place for everything. Instead of many trips in the car or leftover piles at the curb, you load one container and you are done.
What Winter Cleanouts Usually Include
Garage, Basement, and Attic
These are the big ones. Years of stored boxes, broken shelving, old toys, and things you meant to fix all add up. Clearing them out creates real usable space, whether you want a workshop, a play area, or just room to walk around.
Holiday Packaging and Decorations
Cardboard boxes, wrapping, foam, and worn-out decorations take up a surprising amount of room. Flatten the boxes first so they do not eat up space in the container.
Closets and Old Furniture
Worn-out chairs, sagging bookcases, old dressers, and bulky items nobody uses can go straight into the dumpster once they are broken down. Mattresses carry an added fee, so let us know if you plan to load one.
Pre-Renovation Tear-Out
If you are planning a spring remodel in a kitchen, bathroom, or basement, winter is a good time to do the messy interior tear-out so you are ready to build when the weather breaks. Old carpet, flooring, cabinets, and similar debris all take up more room than you might expect.
Sort Before the Dumpster Arrives
A little prep makes the whole project faster. Set up three zones in your garage or basement: Keep, Donate, and Toss. The dumpster is only for the Toss pile. If you have not used it in a year, or it has a broken part you were going to get to someday, it probably belongs there. Moving the donation pile out of the house early makes the job feel smaller right away.
It also helps to gather a few basics before you start:
- Heavy-duty work gloves and sturdy boots
- A dolly or hand truck for heavy items
- Good lighting for basements and attics
- A socket set or screwdriver for taking furniture apart
- Markers and boxes or bags for labeling your piles
Choosing the Right Dumpster Size
This is where most people get stuck. Too small and you have leftover debris. Too large and you may be paying for space you do not need. As a general guide:
- The 12-yard dumpster suits focused jobs, like a single room, one packed garage bay, or a modest basement or attic clear-out. It can also be a good fit if your driveway is on the tighter side.
- The 15-yard dumpster is a versatile middle choice for a whole basement or garage, multi-room decluttering, or a small interior tear-out.
- The 20-yard dumpster is for the biggest jobs, such as whole-house cleanouts, estate clear-outs, and larger renovation debris.

Cold Weather and Dumpster Placement
Winter does not stop a cleanout, but it does change a few small things. Snow and ice can affect where a roll-off dumpster can safely go, so a little planning helps:
- Clear a spot. Pick a flat, open area of your driveway and clear away snow and ice where the dumpster will sit.
- Check access. Make sure the driveway and the approach are open, with room for the truck and no parked cars in the way.
- Watch for ice. Keep the path from your door to the dumpster salted or cleared so you are not carrying heavy items over slick ground.
- Talk to us. If you are not sure about your driveway, tell us when you call and we will work through placement with you.
Loading Tips That Save Space
- Start with a base. Put flat, sturdy items like old doors, paneling, or broken-down shelving on the bottom first.
- Break things down. Flatten cardboard and take apart furniture and bulky items. The less empty air in the container, the more fits.
- Spread the load. Distribute heavy items evenly instead of piling everything in one spot.
- Keep the load level. Do not stack items above the top edge of the container.
What Stays Out of the Dumpster
For everyone's safety, some items cannot go in a roll-off dumpster. Hazardous materials, oil, liquids, paint, and asbestos are not allowed. That includes the half-empty paint cans and cleaning chemicals that tend to turn up in garages and basements, so set those aside.
Other items are regulated or need special handling, such as tires, batteries, electronics, appliances, and propane tanks. Ask us before loading any of these. We cannot accept yard waste or brush (grass, leaves, branches). For a full rundown, see our dumpster rental rules page. When in doubt, a quick call saves you from surprises.
